I am building my own PC but, as I have updated the CD-ROM, CD-RW and hard drive of my existing system within the last year, I wish to use these in my new PC. How will Windows 98 respond when I first start the new machine, as my existing Creative PCI sound card and Voodoo3 AGP graphics card will no longer be present? Will Windows recognise the new hardware and adjust the Registry accordingly? Should I start the computer in Safe Mode or from a bootup floppy?
No, you should reformat your hard drive and reinstall Windows from scratch just as if you were building a PC with a complete set of new components. As you'll be using a different motherboard you will, as far as Windows is concerned, have a new PC.
And because many of the things that are done during installation are carried out according to the hardware Windows finds during installation, you must do a clean reinstall to ensure Windows is set up correctly. See also tip Install old peripherals to your new PC.
